Before you can assign a quiz to a class, you have to upload a class list to Carousel. The class list does not have to be a list of the students' full names, though of course it can be if you want. The class list can contain any unique combination of letters and numbers you may want to use to identify the students and provide them with a unique login. So as alternatives to full names, you could use First Name and Initial, Initial and Last Name, the word PUPIL and their pupil number, their pupil number split in two etc., or in MFL you could even use it as a vocabulary builder:
First Name | Last Name |
Lady | Macbeth |
J J | Thomson |
Albert | E |
Animals | 1 |
2 | Zygotes |
01000001 | 00100000 |
Pamplemousse | Éxotique |
schwarze | Johannisbeere |
el efecto | invernadero |
James | I & VI |
The class list must be in Excel XLSX or XLS file format. See attachment below for Excel template.
The file format must be as follows:
- A single tab
- Two columns on the worksheet with these column headings:
- First Name
- Last Name
Here's an example of a class list for a class of four students:
Make sure that "First Name" is in A1 and "Last Name" is B1 – it won't work if the table is somewhere else on the sheet.
Points to remember:
- You don't have to use full names. (See above)
- All name combinations in a class must be distinct from each other. Carousel won't allow two pupils identified as "Adam B" in the same class, so you must distinguish between them (e.g. Adam A B and Adam J B).
- The names you use will double as the students' login, but aren't case sensitive. Student access to Carousel works via a link supplied by the teacher which prompts students to enter their name (no registration or password is required on their part). Their login name needs to match exactly the name on the class list, but it is not case sensitive so it doesn't matter whether they use capital letters or not.
To create the file in Google Sheets, set up your sheet as described above, and then select file >> download >> Microsoft Excel (.xlsx). This will save an Excel file to your computer which you can upload into Carousel:

Once you have created your class list Excel file, select "CREATE NEW" in the "My Classes" section of the Dashboard and follow the instructions to upload the file (see below).

In the following video Adam Boxer (our Education Director) shows how to create a class by uploading a class list:
